Has anyone built a surface with more than 10 inputs?

Howdy fellow ATEM users.

I am a massive fan of what Skaarhoj has achieved in bringing down the price of surfaces for Vision Mixers but am curious, they go up to 10 inputs so. Has anyone tried building a fully fledged 2 ME surface with an Ardiuno and the Skaarhoj library?

I have went through the API listed here http://skaarhoj.com/fileadmin/BMDPROTOCOL.html and compared it to the 2 ME surface Blackmagic sell as well as what functions we need and it does it all - that puts the limit on hardware.

I've sketched out a design I'd like that allows us to control our 2 ME as well as 1 ME, It comes to 356 buttons.

Before I even consider drawing schematics - What are your thoughts on this rather ambitious project, Has anyone even tried it?

Cheers!

Aaron

356 buttons

I've looked at more buttons a few times......  but I seldom use inputs 11 thru 20 ...... so, a shift button works great.   A smaller surface also frees up desk space to layout my script, tall glass of whiskey etc.  If I need more button options I would rather go have another xKeys for some very specific macros...   Just my thoughts

Aye your right a shift button

Aye your right a shift button is ideal for that purpose.

Our setup is a bit wierd, we have a 2 ME 20 input mixer connected to various IP/Satellite decoders, we then choose the source to send to our 1 ME mixer where we add live graphics and output to live stream so we use inputs 11-20 just as much as 1-10.

I'll think more on it, it would be cheap to build but I'm not sure how reliable it will be as it'l need atleast 4 Ardiuno Mega's even with switch matrix schematatics.

2x 1me control

Or you could do it with 2x 1me panel and button map the 2nd one to 11-20..

I have this one.. And the button mapping works great..

Now theres a decent option as

Now theres a decent option as well! Thanks for that.

Still technically expensive for what the raw materials cost though.

Ohhh! Now that is what Im talking about, I like that. How is the wiring done? I assume it's a matrix keyboard kinda thing.

Its all using a single Arduino

Yes the keys are in a XY matrix and the LED's are using I2C out to a XY matrix.

The production model (when ever I get to it) will use multiple Atmel chips for the keys using I2C, again XY matrix's.

The display is I2C, the rotary encoders are interrupt driven and the joystick (XYZ) is ADC.

The ME 1 and ME 2 busses are separate identical ciruit boards and the effects board above is a single circuit board.

The whole unit is rack width which makes the buttons smaller than traditional switcher buttons.

The T-Bar is currently a fader but that will change to my own designed T-bar. Note there is a larger fader in the top right to give
a longer smoother action fader assignable to either ME 1 or ME 2.

I tried to make this thing for under $2000 but that will be pushing the friendship. But at least its designed and the software is written.
I designed this the week the ATEM 2me was released (about 2013?) using my reverse engineering skills from the ATEM TVS. I still have that original
panel lying around here somewhere.

Thank you for the information

Thank you for the information Bazinoz. This has got me excited, Though I am surprised you got close to $2000 for that. Did you buy proper broadcast buttons?

Skaarhoj at NAB 2017

The question is will Kaspar be at NAB and can I get him to autograph a Tshirt or something?  Love the videos and this gear.  I thought that seing Andrew Kramer at the Adobe booth a few years was awesome - it is not even close now.

The plan

I have sourced 300 broadcast buttons from a supplier in China. Will be stared my mammoth project build shortly!

Not final, but what I'm aiming for:

Will control a 20 input 2 ME and an 8 input tv studio.

Wow that is a beast..  Big project..  Are you building it completely from scratch?   Designing the PCB's yourself too?

I could do this too.. But it would take a few weeks of building and programming..   I could better work for those hours..

Also this will be heavy on your processor.   Not sure what you will use as controller..   Skaarhoj or your own implementation?

Keep us posted how your project goes..
