Upgrading to Television Studio - Conversion & Input/Output Questions

Here is the current setup at our church:

2 - Canon XL-H1 cameras
connected via RG6 into:
Edirol V440HD switcher
PC running MediaShout connected via VGA into the same switcher
Edirol switcher output via VGA into 1x8 VGA multiplexor
1x8 Multiplexor runs VGA to:
A second computer for video archival and
3 EIKI LC-XG250 Projectors (through VGA to 5-wire component cables)

Here is a picture to better describe the setup.

My goal is to swap the Edirol V440HD with a new TVS switcher and replace as little other equipment as possible in order to improve the video quality from our cameras since they are currently only SD coming into the Edirol switcher.

On the inputs side:

I understand the Canon XL-H1 cameras have the capability to run HD out of their SDI outputs.  Since we already have RG6 cables connecting the cameras to the switcher, I should be able to connect the cameras directly into the TVS via SDI without issue (aside from possibly configuring the HD output setting of the cameras).

The PC running MediaShout is connected via VGA.  I understand the video setting would need to match the cameras' video resolution, so the simplest approach would be to buy a new HDMI video card for the PC and run it directly into the TVS.

On the outputs side:

I'd like to keep the 1x8 VGA multiplexor in place since it's already connected to everything.  Since it is running VGA to 5-wire component cables to the projectors, I should be running analog HD already, right?  What equipment would you recommend using to connect the output of the TVS to the VGA multiplexor?  I understand there could be an issue with the TVS outputting YUV color space and the projectors expecting RGB.

Are my assumptions and understanding correct for both the inputs and outputs?  If so, what recommendations would you have for the output conversion to VGA?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Sharing my church setup

Hi,

I haven't used vga multiplexor before. But I (in my church) tried to connect ATEM TVS to projector with this setting:
ATEM TVS HDMI OUT --> HDMI to VGA Converter --> VGA cable --> Projector (via VGA IN); it works for less than 3 meters; but no signal for more thant that; however using 3 meters cable the signal is clear and the color and picture is also ok.

Now, we use this setup (since the distance betweeen ATEM TVS to projector is more than 3 meters):
ATEM TVS SDI OUT --> SDI to Analog Converter from BMD --> RG6 cable --> Projector (via RCA IN); and the picture and colour is also acceptable though there's a slight down quality.

Hope this will give you some info.

Cheers.

For SDI to vga look into a

For SDI to vga look into a DAC60 converter, great piece of gear, does what it says on the tin and configurable for many resolutions.

Also proven to work with the Atem TVS as well. which is important, as you will come to find out ;-)

Thanks for the info!  Are you using RCA composite video into your projector or component?

Would something like either

Would something like either of thee work for SDI to VGA?

http://www.amazon.com/Portta-PETSV-Converter-Compatible-1080p/dp/B00LPHJ...
http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Family-Converter-Compatible-SD-SDI/dp/B00F...

Or would there be YUV/RGB issues?

There are a wealth of these

There are a wealth of these cheaper Chinese products flooding the markets at the moment. I think its due to the rise in home security boxes using video over SDI. I'm not sure I would want to entrust my reputation on these devices especially in a live produced paid for event. Its not what I see as a professional video product, but you pay your monies and take your chance.

Also in the header it suggests they work at 1080P, if thats so the TVS doesn't work at that resolution. You would need to purchase the more expensive production studio or another 4K model Atem.

A.

PS. You also have the chance that they won't work with BMD products. There is a whole section of this website devoted to compatible equipment that will "work" with BMD gear. Also if you do go this route look on eBay they are half the price there for the same product ;-)

Hi, I'm using RCA composite video to the projector via RG6 cable.
